GETTING TO POLAND

Via Airplane

It's possible to fly directly from the United States or Western Europe into Warsaw, Poland's centrally located capital city. There are reasonably inexpensive, non-stop flights from New York and Chicago to Warsaw on LOT, Poland's national airline. It's also easy to fly to Warsaw directly from many major European cities. Airlines with service to Warsaw include Air France, Aeroflot, Czechoslovak Airlines, Delta, Sabena, and Swissair. The following is a list of airlines with service to Warsaw and Krakow:

  • Aeroflot (02) 628-1710
  • Air France (02) 628-1281

Via Train or Bus

Younger travelers to Central and Eastern Europe often choose to fly from North America to a major city in Western Europe and then travel the rest of the way by train or bus. Though considerably slower than flying, traveling overland has several advantages. If you want to save some money on airfare, traveling from North America to London, Amsterdam, or Frankfurt is usually the cheapest. Remember, though, that you have to add the cost of your train fare to your destination in Poland to your airfare in order to compare overall travel costs. International train and bus fares in Europe are not cheap, so if your budget is tight you may want to calculate the cost of the entire trip before you decide which route to take. Train or bus travel affords you the opportunity to see more of the European continent, and it gives you the ability to stop off in different places along the way. This is especially true of train travel—just make sure you have the kind of ticket that enables you to re-board without having to pay extra.
