Gulf Clean Up Volunteers

You can’t turn on the news these days without hearing about the clean up efforts from the British Petroleum oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico.

Disasters such as these sure to wreak havoc on our ecosystem and give all of us pause for thought about finding alternative fuel sources.

If you have spent any time on the JobMonkey home page, you know that we have tons of information about working in the oil and gas industry, from laying pipelines to working on offshore drilling stations. Today I have some information to offer up about this lucrative and dangerous field that focuses on clean-up efforts. If you live in the Gulf Coast region, or just find yourself wanting to do something to help the people, fish or fowl being impacted by the spill, here’s a list of nine ways you can volunteer for the clean up effort.

1. Own Vessel Cleanup with training from British Petroleum, including use of safety equipment on your boat and a Hazmat course

2. Oil Bird Recovery in Pascagoula, through a one-day training sponsored by Audubon Action Society

3. Volunteering with Sierra Club — sign up online and they will contact you to match you up with a volunteer mobilization effort

4. Bird rescue with Save Our Seabirds in Sarasota, FL — fill  out their online form or call 941-388-3010

5. Readiness volunteers with Alabama Coastal Foundation — sign up online or call 251-990-6002

6. Readiness volunteers in Biloxi, Mississippi — sign up online and the volunteer coordinator will contact you

7. Coast line clean up in New Orleans and Gulf of Mexico area — sign up online and the volunteer coordinator will contact you

8. Protect and restore coastal Louisiana with the Coalition to Restore Coastal Louisiana  – sign up online

9. Volunteers to assist with a  variety of needs — from wildlife recovery to photographing oil movement — with Barataria-Terrebonne National Estuary Program  — sign up online

Have you volunteered to help with the clean up efforts in the Gulf? Tell us about your experiences in the comments section! We would love to hear from you.

I am 55 years old and have a flexible schedule and would leave my part time job in Michigan for a chance to be a part of the clean up. I have great leadership and organizational skills. I am very good with the public, retired from local government work. I feel the strong need to help. I wish I lived closer to the situation. If there are any jobs out there I would be willing to work just for a place to stay and food allowance. I know this is a long shot. God Bless.

Hello, I am a hard worker and really interested in finding employment with some type of clean up company in the Gulf . I have 7 years experience in construction and looking for something new . I have always dreamed of living in Louisiana and now that all this is happening on top of Katrina it is very upsetting to see such a beautiful place being destroyed . I have a family and hard working wife who would be willing to help out as well. Unsure if anyone is actually reading these if so and you need a couple hard workers let me know

I am writing in reference to my 18 year old daughter who is still considering in what direction to take her life…. school, job, joining the military. She is an animal lover, ocean lover, and cares about the environment. Not sure if there are any volunteer programs for younger people who might be able to contribute in some way, in exchange for a host family. She would also be more than willing to take on a part time job, in order to help finance her stay. If these messages truly get to anyone who might consider the help of my daughter, please contact me at your earliest convenience. I would love to offer my time in the efforts, as well, however, I have a younger son still at home, and a husband who is absent a lot due to his business travel.

Thanks so much for any information that you may be able to provide.
