Here are some tips that will help you find a job out of state:

  1. Use Your Network – Tap into your network and see if you know anyone in your chosen destination. Who you know can help you land a job.
  2. Research and Visit Your Destination – Take the time to visit and research your new destination. The more you know, the easier it will be to adjust to your new home. It also gives you opportunities to meet potential employers in person.
  3. Be Honest In Your Job Application – Be specific in your cover letter and all communications. Let the hiring team know where you really are and when exactly you plan to move.
  4. Be Responsive And Available – Be ready for video interviews, phone calls, and emails at all times. Show that you are dedicated to the opportunity by being immediately responsive to any form of communication.
  5. Use A Local Address – If at all possible use a local address on all official paperwork. It will typically help you get farther in the job search.
  6. Research Local Job Market – Learn about the job market in your chosen location. It may be totally different than where you are now. Find out about average wages, different companies, demand for workers, cost of living, and other necessary information.
  7. Choose The Right Words – Use words that show you are committed to the new job. For example, I am moving and need a job. versus I would move if I get a job. The right words will help to show your commitment.
  8. Offer To Pay For Relocation – Relocating a new employee can be a huge expense for a company. If they aren’t worried about that cost, you’ll have a better chance of getting hired.
