Do you know what downward dog, shooting bow, happy baby, half moon, half lotus, cobra, flying crow, monkey, and warrior are? They are all yoga poses. These could become everyday terms for you if you seek out a yoga job.

According to Merriam-Webster.com, yoga is a Hindu philosophy that teaches a person to experience inner peace by controlling the body and mind. It boosts awareness of the physical, mental, and spiritual by focusing on breathing techniques, specific poses, and meditation. It’s been around for thousands of years and it is still growing in popularity.

Chances are pretty good that you know someone who does yoga on a daily or at least regular basis. Over 15 million Americans do yoga (that’s a pretty big network!). It’s a multi-billion dollar industry and it seems to be growing. One infographic states that nearly $27 billion is spent on yoga products each year – that’s an 87% increase in spending on yoga products in the last 5 years!

People choose to do yoga for a variety of reasons – flexibility, general conditioning, stress relief, improve overall health, strength, or physical fitness. Yoga has proven to be a solid business and as American’s show more interest in physical fitness, it is expected to continue to grow by over 26% in the next 5 years.

Now could be the perfect time for you to get into yoga. It may even be a better time for you to turn yoga into your career. Most yoga studios are run by independent and local businesses – not mega corporations. It’s a great niche for a yoga fanatic to start a yoga business.

The first step to pursuing a yoga career path is to choose what type of yoga you want to specialize in. Some examples are Anusara, Vinyasa Ashtanga, Bikram, Kundalini, or Integral. Each type of yoga focuses on different things and has its own following. Pick one that appeals to you. Then go out and become a yoga expert.

After you develop a passion for yoga, you have a few options. You can open a yoga studio, become a yoga teacher, or market and sell yoga products.
