Should You Relocate For A Job?

There are lots of things to consider when relocating for a job. Change is always an exciting and scary time in your life. There’s something comfortable about life as you know it, but a new beginning in a new place can also be appealing. Relocating is a big deal that needs to be taken seriously. It’s never smart to just relocate on a whim. Do your research and give it some serious thought.

Before you pack your things, load up the moving van, and hit the highway, there are a few things to consider when relocating for a job:

  1. How much will it cost and who’s going to pay for you to relocate?
  2. Where are you going to live?
  3. How does the cost of living compare?
  4. Will you make more money?
  5. Is there room to grow as a professional at the new company?
  6. Do you really love this job? This company?
  7. Is the destination good for work-life balance?
  8. Will your family like their new home?
  9. What are you giving up to go? What are you going to gain?
  10. Do you like the new location?
  11. Is the weather nice?
  12. How this impact your relationships?
  13. Is the job a sure thing?
  14. Is it a healthy company?
  15. Do you know anyone that lives there?
  16. Is this situation an overall improvement or a downgrade?
  17. Does relocating make sense?

If you’re seriously going to relocate, go for a test drive first. Plan a trip to see the place, the employer, etc. This will give you a taste of what it’s like before you fully commit. If you’re still undecided after carefully analyzing all of the things that you need to consider when relocating for a job, it might be best to trust your gut. Ultimately it’s up to you to decide the ultimate question: Should I stay or should I go?
