Is Now The Best Time To Switch Jobs?

It takes a while to figure out what you want to do with your life. Sometimes you have to find many different jobs before you find the perfect fit for you. That’s ok. Trial and error is part of the job search in today’s world. The hardest part of switching careers is finding the right time to do it.

Whenever you switch jobs it’s a stressful and exciting time. There are plenty of reasons to consider switching careers. Maybe you suffer from burnout, financial difficulties, boredom, life changes, relocation issues, or you just want to follow your dreams. Whatever the reason, don’t be scared of the unknown. As Nike says, “Just Do It.” Switching jobs may be the best thing you ever do.

It’s important to always be ready to switch careers, but here are a few obvious signs that now is the best time to switch jobs:

  • You’re bored of your current job. – Try to avoid the tedium of a boring job and burn out. Get out before it’s too late.
  • Your job seems easy because you’re good at what you do. – Are you overqualified? Do you need to be challenged? Learning new things will keep you fresh. It may be easiest to do this in a new environment.
  • You’re absolutely horrible at what you do. – If you don’t have the experience or training to be successful, seek it out or switch jobs.
  • No one at work likes you. – How much time do you spend with your co-workers? If you don’t get along with them, it might be time to find a company with a different culture.
  • You successfully completed a major project/campaign/event/etc. – It’s always smart to go out on top. Use your latest project as a launchpad for a new job.
  • It’s a new year. – Fiscal years are the start of a new business year. It is often when companies look to hire and fire. Why not start fresh?
  • You just don’t care. – If you’re apathetic about your work, boss, or company, then it’s time to find your motivation again.
  • After a vacation. – Vacation is the best time to refresh, recharge, and re-motivate. It takes a while to earn vacation at a new job, so right after your latest vacation is a good time to make a switch. You’ll be more focused and ready.
  • You just encountered a major life change. – When you have a baby, your spouse gets a promotion, or a family emergency demands your attention, you need to reevaluate what’s important to you.
  • Your goals change. – If you’re heading down a path that doesn’t align with your company’s goals, then make a switch.
  • No one notices your true value. – Everyone requires a bit of praise or maybe a promotion or a raise. If no one notices how valuable you are, then move on and find a company that appreciates what you do.
  • You can make more money. – Life isn’t all about money, but money can allow you to live comfortably. If you have an opportunity to make a positive career move and make more money, you should take advantage of it.
  • You’re totally happy and content. – Sometimes it’s best to leave a job when your happy instead of leaving on a negative note. Keep your resume up-to-date and always watch out for your next career stepping stone.
  • You want to follow your dreams. – What do you daydream about doing? Go and find a job that allows you to do more of that. You’ll be happier.
