What’s your dream job?

I don’t normally watch Oprah (I swear, I don’t!), but the other day I happened to catch her episode about dream jobs. From the Creative Director of the wildly popular clothing brand J. Crew, Jenna Lyons (catch snippets of her segment here) to the so-called rock ‘n’ roll florist, Jeff Leathem, Oprah got up close and personal with three people who have truly amazing jobs.

What I loved about this particular show wasn’t just that it got you to dream for a few minutes about what it would be like to have such an incredibly ‘out-there’ job, but moreso that Oprah did a great job of getting each guest to really focus in on how they got there — what led them to work in a career that is truly a dream come true for them. And do you know what each of them said? “Do what you love.”

I know, it sounds incredibly cliché, but I think the advice is real. It isn’t about a six figure paycheck (although high paying jobs are the dream for many people), and it isn’t about fame or fortune.

It’s about following your heart — and enjoying yourself every single day. If you are stuck in a dead-end job, maybe it’s time to do some soul searching. Ask yourself: What is my dream job? Don’t censor yourself. Just brainstorm. What would make you really, truly happy?

Once you have an answer, it’s time to get even more audacious and go for it. Find the path to make it happen. For Buddy Valastro, the Cake Boss from TLC, baking and decorating cakes has been his bliss since as long as he can remember. And today, he does what he loves — on cable television for millions of viewers and thousands of satisfied customers.

In the spirit of people like Oprah’s guests, Buddy, Jenna and Jeff, the JobMonkey has recently created a rocking new section entitled, Unique, Cool and Odd Jobs. We profile dozens of interesting jobs — from forensic artist work to jobs training elephants. No, working with pachyderms and sketching pictures of criminals may not be your idea of a blissful day, but for someone out there, it is! Come visit our newest section and see if you can find your dream career among the profiles.
