Can You Apply For More Than One Job At The Same Company?

People always ask if they can apply for more than one job at the same company? The short answer is yes, but there are a few things that you really need to think about first. It always depends on the situation.

The key to landing a job is to convince a recruiter than you are qualified for the job, are keen to fill a specific role, and that you will be an asset to the company. If you apply to more than one job at the same company, a recruiter might think you’re desperate – that’s not a good thing.

If you choose to apply for more than one job with the same company, pay attention to the details. Here are a few things to consider:

  • Always apply for jobs that you are qualified for. If you apply for two positions make sure they are somewhat related. For example, a mechanic position and a UX designer have very different skill sets, while a concierge and a front desk agent have somewhat similar skill sets. Recruiters will notice what jobs you apply for. This will help them determine if you are eager or crazy.
  • Apply for each job separately. Write separate, customized cover letters.
  • Be upfront and honest with the HR department that you are applying for multiple jobs in the same company. Sometimes it’s a good idea to apply for one job and then contact HR directly by phone or email to let them know you are happy to be considered for multiple positions – this shows you are committed and loyal to the company instead of haphazardly applying for jobs.
  • Consider the company. If you apply for different jobs at a large corporation, like a Fortune 500 company, different recruiters may handle your job applications. They may never even know you applied more than once. If you do the same thing at a local mom and pop shop, they will instantly see that you are applying for more than one job.
  • Applying for multiple jobs is more common in resort communities, retail positions with multiple locations, and large companies.
  • Limit the number of job applications you send off. If you decide to apply for multiple positions, limit how may you apply to. Try to keep it to 1 or 2 jobs, not 12. Remember, you don’t want to look desperate. You want to appear confident, qualified, and loyal.

Be prepared to answer questions in your job interview about why you submitted multiple job applications. It will come up.

Unfortunately, there is no perfect answer to the age old question of “should I apply for more than one job at the same company?” The answer depends on so many factors and it must be a personal choice based on your situation.

Applying to more than one job at the same company is a definite gamble. You may ruin your chances of getting hired or you may set yourself up for long term success. Ask yourself, “will multiple job applications increase my chances of getting a job interview?” That’s a decision you will have to make.
