Alaska Summer Staff Interview
Here's an interview with someone who worked several summers in Alaska.
What was the biggest surprise about your summer job?
That's a tie. Seeing animals right in your backyard was a pleasant surprise, and they people you meet are really friendly and nice.
What was your biggest challenge?
The weather the second summer I was there was terrible and it was a big challenge not to let it depress me.
What did you like best about working in Alaska?
I loved the clean air, the lack of people everywhere and no traffic jams. And of course the mountains!
What advice would you give to someone looking for a seasonal job in Alaska?
If possible, bring a car. If nothing else buy a beater in Alaska and sell it when you leave. It will make a world of difference in your stay and open up all kinds of trips, tours and adventures.
Don't move from the city you're living in to a city in Alaska. Work in the bush and live the real Alaska experience. Alaska is more of a state of mind than a place, a very peaceful, laid-back state of mind that I like very much.
Would you go back again?
I would be there now if I could. I would probably work in Fairbanks or in the bush near Fairbanks, since every time the weather was bad in Healy and I went to Fairbanks for supplies the weather was great.
