ESL Teaching Advice

Ruth is from Wales. She moved to Greece with her retired parents to stay for good. She found a permanent ESL (English as a Second Language) teaching job at a school in Greece. She is still in Greece working around other ESL and TESOL teachers from around the world..

"I thought that Greece would be the best solution for my family. My parents were very old and needed the sun, and I needed a change. Our lifestyle changed as soon as we arrived in Greece. I got a teaching job after searching the schools in our area and got a nice employer and a good salary. After some time I met my husband-to-be and we have been together since then. After my parents died we moved to a new area.

I have not regretted my moving to Greece. It's not easy to get a good job at a school, they mostly want temporary teachers, but if you persist you will eventually find one that suits you.

The most important thing to look for is the contract you sign and the accommodation they offer you. I chose to have my own flat so they only give me my salary and IKA benefits. I prefer that to having a place that I may not like. If you are happy with your place and working environment you enjoy your work and your life in Greece. Greek people can be great friends if you get to know them. They are very helpful, especially if they are your neighbours. I got so many friends here that I feel this country as my home now."
