If you are looking for an entry-level job in retail, for the most part you will only have to show up and fill out an application.
Sometimes these are paper applications that you can get from the cashiers, sometimes there are kiosks and computers for you to use to fill out an application right on site, and still other places encourage you to submit an application online.
However, if you are applying for a position at a higher level, you’ll probably need a resume to accompany your application. Because of the great competition, some stores may even require a resume to be a simple sales clerk or cashier.
These resumes should focus on your customer service skills primarily, since retail is a customer service oriented industry. You should focus on writing about how you have helped customers in the past, and how you have gone above and beyond the typical service to help people.
In addition to your customer service skills, focusing on abilities like quick learning and multitasking should be at the top of your list of things to discuss.
Provide a couple of short examples of your skills, but for the most part you should keep your resume for a retail job as short as possible, as these people have to weed through a lot of applications.
You should keep your job history down to your most relevant ones in addition to the most recent two or three regardless of relevancy. Note that you can provide a more detailed job history upon request so that they do not think that there were large gaps in your employment, but do not write everything out or your resume could become much longer than you need for it to be.
