World Cup Soccer Jobs
The World Cup is the largest soccer tournament in the world. Held every four years since its conception in 1930 (except for two occasions in 1942 and 1946), the World Cup has garnered the attention of millions of fans in perhaps the most widely watched sporting event in the world.
Lead and organized by FIFA, the next World Cup will be in 2010 in South Africa. The tournament, which generally takes place over the course of a month, is set to begin with the opening match kickoff on June 11, 2010 and with the final match scheduled July 11, 2010. This is the first World Cup to be hosted in Africa and spectators can expect to see matches in both newly constructed stadiums as well as improved existing stadiums in the cities of: Cape Town, Durban, Johannesburg, Mangaung/Bloemfontein, Port Elizabeth, Nelspruit, Polokwane, Rustenburg and Pretoria.
For ticket information, tournament schedule, accommodations, South Africa travel information, team statistics and information on past tournaments, visit the 2010 FIFA World Cup homepage.
FIFA World Cup Jobs
The South Africa tourism agency is said to expect over 450,000 tourists over the span of six weeks before after and during the tournament, creating a number of jobs in the tourism industry. The increase in tourism alone is expected to create nearly 80,000 jobs for hotels, restaurants and other tourism-related areas and as many as 80,000 additional jobs related directly to the 2010 World Cup. A majority of these jobs will be given to South African residents as construction, media, transportation, officiating, technology, and a wealth of other jobs are being resourced out of South Africa. Many FIFA officials however, are also on event staff for planning with the World Cup. There are limited listed job opportunities for the 2010 World Cup but working directly for FIFA, or working for Engineer Work Solutions South Africa, the Human Relations and Engineering company that is staffing a large portion of the work for the World Cup, are two excellent places to begin a World Cup job search.
Volunteering for the World Cup
There is a great deal more information regarding becoming a volunteer for the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.
Volunteers are needed in nearly every event planning and execution arena in order for the World Cup to be successful. Most of the volunteers will be assisting the tournament in each of the different host cities in transportation, accreditation, hospitality, information services and administration. All volunteers must have their applications in by August 31st 2009 and will be informed of their official position no later than the end of January 2010. In order to be considered as a volunteer you must be older than 18 years old on or before March 1, 2010. No independent applications are accepted because each volunteer needs to apply directly through the FIFA World Cup Volunteer's webpage.
Volunteers can begin applying in July 2009.
