Federal Emergency Management Agency Jobs

According to their website, the mission of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) is "to reduce the loss of life and property and protect the nation from all hazards, including natural disasters, acts of terrorism, and other man-made disasters, by leading and supporting the nation in a risk-based, comprehensive emergency management system of preparedness, protection, response, recovery, and mitigation."

The agency does this through a range of actions. They train people and local governments on disaster response. They help plan ways to mitigate and reduce the potential harm that could be caused by an emergency situation, and in the event of a disaster, they help coordinate federal and local responders, and they make emergency assistance available in times of crisis. FEMA jobs are available throughout the U.S. but particularly in geographical areas hit hard by flooding and other kinds of natural disasters.

FEMA has more than 2,600 full-time employees working in Washington, D.C. and around the country. The agency now falls under the Department of Homeland Security. Considering the agency's mission, there are a wide range of jobs available across the country. A few examples include:

  • Training and Education Officer This is a GS-15 position-at the high end of the government pay scale. This person has the high-level responsibility for managing the development of the training programs that will prepare responders to deal with an ever-changing range of threats. To qualify for this type of position, a candidate must have a four-year degree and experience in disaster management, and also background and education in training. Pay range: $107,962–140,355 per year.
  • Community Planner Works with regional authorities to assist in disaster mitigation planning. This position requires a four-year degree in community planning or another related discipline with course work in community planning. Since this is a job for an experienced person with a background in the field, it also requires previous work experience in community planning or disaster mitigation. Pay range: $65,315 - 107,185.
  • FEMA Training Specialist Develops training materials and sometimes delivers the training. This position requires an understanding of teaching adults, measuring the effectiveness of training programs, and an ability to communicate effectively either in writing or verbally. Pay range: $57,171 - 74,323.
