Czechoslovakia formally separated into the Czech and Slovak Republics (also known as Slovakia) on January 1, 1993. Though they are in fact independent countries, their shared history and proximity as neighbors puts them in a unique position with respect to the purposes of this program. These newly independent countries still share much of the infrastructure that was built up over the years since the Republic of Czechoslovakia formed in 1918. Consequently, this section will cover both countries, though they will be treated as separate entities.
