Crystal Mountain Ski Area Profile

The Chicago Tribune calls Crystal "The Midwest's Best Family Resort," and both Better Homes and Gardens and L.L. Bean recognize its trails as some of the best in the nation. Cross-country (a.k.a "skinny") skiers will enjoy the forested landscape and wonderfully relaxing resort atmosphere.

Winter Activities

Whether you are a downhill enthusiast or strictly a Nordic fan, you will enjoy the thirty-two kilometers of cross-country trails and the twenty-three downhill runs. The Gorge offers a steep mogul field, while the groomed and lighted Nordic trails allow for night-skiing and solitude. Half the runs are beginning and expert, and the rest are for intermediate skiers.

If you prefer snowboarding to skiing, Crystal Mountain is happy to oblige. In fact, the resort offers lessons in both.

Snowmobiling, ice skating, sleigh rides, and indoor swimming and tennis are also easily accessible.

Summer Activities

Summer in Michigan is far from boring. The beaches along the shores of Lake Michigan with their spectacular dunes and pine-tree surroundings are among the most beautiful in the country. Boating, fishing, waterskiing, and windsurfing are a few of the many uses for this Great Lake. The western shore of Michigan is also a great place for camping. Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore, (616) 326-5134, has wildlife watching, hiking, and camping opportunities. For other outdoor recreation suggestions, contact the offices of Michigan State Parks and Forests.

Après-ski

Benzie County has many outstanding restaurants and bars. The Wildflower is highly recommended. The resort itself has many opportunities to relax and enjoy after a challenging day on the slopes.

Transportation

Crystal Mountain is in the northwest corner of Michigan, only ten miles from the coast of Lake Michigan. Traverse City is twenty-eight miles northeast via Route 37 and U.S. 31. The resort can be seen from the highway. Cherry Capital Airport offers regular service between Chicago and Detroit on American Eagle, Midway Connection, Northwest, and Air Link. Flights to Chicago and Detroit are available from major airlines. Ground service to the resort is available. There is no local transit system, so make sure you have your own transportation.

Housing

Apartments within the area are few and far between, so it is a good idea to visit before making a move. The local paper or a realtor for Benzie County will give you an idea of prices and availability for rentals.

Crystal Mountain Ski Resort Employment

Crystal Mountain is the largest seasonal employer in the area (370 winter and 290 summer hires). Read the following listing carefully and apply prior to the season.
