Silver Mountain Area Profile

Though not as well known as other Idaho resorts like Sun Valley or Brundage, Silver Mountain is a growing destination for skiers from as far away as Seattle and Portland. As the newest destination resort in the country, 60 percent of Silver Mountain's terrain is only five years old. With its easy access only one -quarter of a mile off I-90 and its dry powder and sunny climate, Silver Mountain is sure to please even the most discriminating skier.

Winter Activities

Silver Mountain boasts the largest gondola in the world, carrying skiers three miles from the town of Kellogg to the summit. The ski area itself is made up of two peaks, Kellogg Peak and Wardner Peak. With seven lifts serving 2,200 vertical feet and 2,000 acres of skiing territory, this is a skiers paradise. Fifteen percent of the terrain is for beginners, 45 percent for intermediates, and the rest for experts. Snowboarding is encouraged at the mountain, and boarders come from around the Northwest to try out its natural half-pipe.

Many skiers who visit Silver Mountain also ski Schweitzer, about thirty-five miles away. Other winter activities in the area include cross-country skiing and snowmobiling.

Summer Activities

Silver Mountain is located within a few hours' drive of countless lakes, national forests, and state parks. Popular summer activities include hiking, mountain biking, and horseback riding. The resort hosts summer concerts held at an amphitheater located at the top of the gondola ride. Recent performers include Diamond Rio, the Everly Brothers, and Kathy Mattea. The gondola also carries mountain bikers up the mountain for downhill rides up to twenty-four miles long.

Apr�s-ski

Most skiers at Silver Mountain stay in Kellogg or Coeur d'Alene and find evening entertainment in those towns. The favorite hot spot near the base of the mountain is Timbers Cantina, a Mexican restaurant and bar with occasional live entertainment.

Transportation

The mountain's gondola carries skiers directly from Kellogg to the mountain's summit.

Because the resort is conveniently located only one-quarter of a mile off I-90, most visitors drive to their destination. Those who fly can arrive at Spokane International Airport, only an hour away.

Housing

The majority of employees from out of town find housing in Kellogg, located at the base of the summit. Kellogg is still a reasonably priced place to live and newcomers shouldn't have much trouble finding a house or apartment.

Silver Mountain Ski Area Employment

Silver Mountain says it has no trouble finding enough workers in the surrounding area to fill the majority of its positions. Many employees live in the area and work at the resort on weekends. The resort also a high rate of returning employees. Nonetheless, it's worth pursuing a job at Silver Mountain. Ski and snowboard instructors especially should apply, as these are typically some of the more difficult positions to fill.
