Area Profile

In November of 1992 Snowshoe merged with nearby Silver Creek to form the largest ski resort in the Southeast. Other improvements include new lifts and snowmaking capabilities. The resort is near 900,000-acre Monogahela National Forest in beautiful Pocahontas County, West Virginia. This 11,000-acre, four-season resort draws visitors from all over the region.

Winter Activities

The mountain's terrain has an even split between beginner and intermediate slopes, with 18 percent left over for experts. With fifty-three slopes and trails and eleven chairlifts, Snowshoe has something for everyone.

Other winter activities at Snowshoe include intercollegiate ski races, a skiing bartender race, a pro-am challenge, and a variety of other races and special events. Also, the entire mountain is open to snowboarders.

Summer Activities

The resort's two-year-old golf course has been rated one of the nation's top ten. Other activities include hiking, tennis, and horseback riding. Mountain biking is big at Snowshoe - the area is home to over 100 miles of trails, and a mountain bike festival is held each summer.

Après-ski

Snowshoe has a hearty nightlife, including a number of bars and restaurants. The Connection is one popular hangout, and the resort even has a comedy club, The Comedy Cellar. The town of Marlenton, about a half-hour drive from the resort, also provides visitors with evening activities.

Transportation

Snowshoe is located on U.S. 219 in southeastern West Virginia. The resort is about a three-hour drive from Roanoke, Virginia, and four hours from Richmond, Virginia. There is a free shuttle bus connecting Snowshoe to Silver Creek.

Housing

Some employee housing is available at the mountain itself, but it is hard to come by because of demand. Independent housing in the town of Marlenton, about twenty-five minutes away by car, is easily found.

Employment

The resort hires a good number of winter employees each year in a variety of capacities. Other work opportunities can be found in Marlenton.
