What to Pack for your Ski Trip
The weather and your job will be the two primary factors when deciding what to pack.
The nature of working at a ski resort means snow and freezing temperatures, so you'll want to be sure to pack plenty of warm clothes. Those who ski will certainly want to bring the appropriate equipment and clothing. Veteran ski bums say they always bring two pairs of skis in case the first gets damaged. Finally, if you will be working in the public eye you may be required to dress nicely. Positions such as waiter or waitress, front desk staff, bartender, or host may require professional attire. Other positions like janitor, housekeeping, trail maintenance, or ski patrol may require a uniform, but one will probably be provided.
Do not bring everything you own with you. Remember, housing is very expensive so most likely your living space will be tight and you'll need every inch of it for your belongings.
Below are some suggestions on what to pack:
- Sweaters
- Long underwear
- Wool socks, hat, scarf, and gloves
- Sunglasses and sunscreen (SPF 15 or above is a must on the slopes)
- Skis, snowboards, boots, poles, goggles, and ski clothing
- Warm, waterproof boots
- Nice clothing if required for your job
- Personal items such as toiletries, books, or a Walkman
Don't forget that when you're hired your employer will expect you to provide documentation to prove your identity and eligibility to work in the United States. You will not be permitted to start work until this form has been completed, so be absolutely sure to bring proper documentation when you report for your first day on the job. If you attend a job fair, bring it then. Americans working in Canada should read the section on work permits at the beginning of that country's section.
