Profile of an Adventure Camp

Outward Bound is one of, if not the most, popular and intense Adventure Camps that exist. It first began in World War II and was officially started in the states in 1950. Outward Bound challenges people through wilderness exploration and extreme survival situations helping people to challenge themselves with the intention of building character and perspective. Their mission statement states:

To inspire character development and self-discovery in people of all ages and walks of life through challenge and adventure, and to impel them to achieve more than they ever thought possible, to show compassion for others and to actively engage in creating a better world.

Their courses are based on the elements of the outdoors and take place in Alaska, the western and eastern United States, the Caribbean and even South America. Their courses challenge individuals while surrounding an adventurous theme such as ice climbing and hiking, backpacking, whitewater rafting, dog sledding and desert backpacking. Outward Bound has received so much positive feedback because of how challenging the courses are. Courses are mapped and chosen carefully and designed to really challenge the individual or group. People come away from this unique Adventure Camp with a strong sense of who they are and the challenges they can endure. Not to mention, wilderness camps take place in some of the most breath taking regions in the world. Talk about refreshing!

Employment at Outward Bound

There are numerous employment opportunities at Outward Bound. Some include administrative and clerical positions, while others are field positions and instructors. All are important for the functioning work model of an adventure camp and is an excellent example of how even extreme adventure camps need office workers to function successfully.

Field Positions are the most sought after and generate the most interest when it comes to employment with Outward Bound. Field Positions are filled based on activity. For Outward Bound Wilderness, this means extensive knowledge in the outdoor area you wish to work and the willingness to train further. Outward Bound Field Instructors must embody the positive attitude and philosophies that Outward Bound stands for. Outward Bound hires seasonal employees each year and each summer there are over 100 positions available for each activity.
