New Zealand Casinos

Gambling in New Zealand is increasing, with tourists and residents spending over $2 billion per year on racing and sports betting, casinos, and lotteries.

The trend was going up year to year, showing that although New Zealand is not traditionally a country where people go to gamble, it is before more popular.

Gambling in casinos first was legalized in New Zealand in 1994, when Christchurch Casino became the first casino to open its doors. Currently, there are only a handful of casinos in this country, the largest of which is Auckland’s Sky City Casino with 110 table games and over 1,600 slot machines and video machines. Online gambling is heavily restricted in New Zealand, making casinos even more popular for residents and tourists alike.

New Zealand does claim its own little part in gambling history, as it because the first county to offer totalisor sports bettering for horse racing and greyhound racing. Today, a special racing board governs these sports and the gambling involved with them.

You must be 18 to gamble in New Zealand. One study done in the past decade showed that 94% of New Zealand’s residents had participated in gambling at least once in their lives, and 86% had gambled at least once in the past six months. Most of that gambling is done through the national lottery, but 11% over males and 10% of females had been to a casino in the past six months. As gambling in New Zealand increases, the government will feel increasing pressure to give out more casino licenses, providing new opportunities for those wishing to gamble.
